Getting a New Rochelle basement dry after the rain stops
A drying firm gets a wet basement back to normal with extraction, moisture mapping and a run of air movers and dehumidifiers until the readings settle, and the sooner that begins the more of the room survives. Rain is the usual culprit inland. The National Weather Service recorded 7.79 inches at New Rochelle during Ida, and FEMA paid 136 flood claims in the city for that storm. Heavy rain water is judged on inspection rather than assumed to be the worst category, so a good share of it can be dried where it lies.

What water damage drying involves in New Rochelle

What decides a New Rochelle dry out
Two things decide how much of the room can be saved: how long it has been wet and where the water came from. Rain that seeped through a wall and was caught within hours is often a drying job alone. Surge water along the shore is not, and the soaked material comes out first. If a mopped floor and a dehumidifier have the basement reading dry within a couple of days, you have likely done what a crew would, and we will say so.
Hours since it arrived
Tell the drying firm when the water came in. Past two days the job includes checking for growth, not just drying.
Inland rain or shoreline surge
Rain gets judged on inspection. Surge is seawater, which the standard treats as grossly contaminated from the start.
Hardwood and stairs
Wood floors and stair treads can often be dried rather than replaced if the drying starts early. Ask the firm to measure them.

In a March 16, 2026 position statement the ANSI/IICRC S500 Consensus Body states: "Top-down water ingress, wind-driven rain and water from weather related events are not automatically considered Category 3 Water." It says the category is set by a "preliminary determination" made by the restorer after inspection and information gathering.

New Rochelle questions about drying after a storm
We are not in a flood zone, so how did water reach the basement?
Half of New Rochelle's paid flood claims with a recorded zone were rated outside the high risk zones. Rain that runs off streets and yards, or high groundwater, reaches plenty of basements the map does not mark.
Should the dehumidifier stay on after the crew leaves?
Often, yes. EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, and a basement that has just taken water is worth watching for a few weeks.
